Supporting someone with cancer can be challenging—you want to be there for them, but it’s hard to know the right words or actions. At ToTs Frishion™, we believe in creating a community of support, understanding, and compassion. Here’s a simple guide on what to do (and what to avoid) when supporting a loved one through their cancer journey.
Do’s ✅
1️⃣ Listen More, Speak Less – Sometimes, the best thing you can do is offer a listening ear. Let them express their feelings without rushing to respond.
2️⃣ Offer Specific Help – Instead of saying, “Let me know if you need anything,” offer tangible support like cooking a meal, driving them to an appointment, or running errands.
3️⃣ Respect Their Feelings – Whether they’re feeling hopeful, scared, or exhausted, validate their emotions without judgment.
4️⃣ Check-In Regularly – A simple “Thinking of you” message can mean the world to someone facing cancer.
Don’ts ❌
🚫 Avoid Toxic Positivity – Saying “Stay positive” or “Everything happens for a reason” can sometimes feel dismissive. Instead, acknowledge their reality with empathy.
🚫 Don’t Compare Stories – Everyone’s journey is different. Saying “My aunt had cancer and she was fine” may not be comforting.
🚫 Don’t Disappear – Even if you don’t know what to say, just being present makes a difference. Cancer can be isolating, and your presence matters.
🚫 Avoid Giving Medical Advice – Unless you’re a doctor, don’t suggest treatments or question their medical decisions. Instead, offer emotional and practical support.
Supporting a loved one with cancer is about being present, empathetic, and offering help in meaningful ways. Small acts of kindness can make a big difference in their journey.
